Like baby food!
I decided to document the process I go through to make my sons' baby food. It is really easy and REALLY cheap!
I made squash. Butternut squash to be exact. Get a sharp knife!
Cut in half (doesn't need to be exactly in half, I don't think I have done a perfect cut yet!)
Wash your hands! Then scoop out the seeds and guts, rinse.
Throw them in a 350 degree oven until your can easily slide a fork through the flesh (not the skin!) It takes about 1 hour to 1.5 hours. Depending on the size.
Let it cool for about 10-15 minutes then (wash your hands!) cut the flesh and scoop it out into a clean glass bowl.
Using a mixer, puree the squash to the desired consistency. The mixer blades will grab the little strings that come out of the squash. If it isn't mixing well, you can add a little water, but I prefer not to. I like it to be pure food, not watered down.
Scoop the puree into an ice cube tray and tap it to get the air bubbles out. Each cube is approximately 1 ounce (standard ice cube trays) of food. Smooth it out and stick it in the freezer overnight.
In the morning, grab the tray, flip it over, and run some warm water over the bottom. It makes the cubes easier to get out.
Now get a freezer bag and label it with what the contents are and the date you made it.
Wash your hands and pop the cubes out one by one and put them in the bag. Squeeze the air out and pop it back into the freezer.
Now whenever you want to feed your baby the food, wash your hands, and just pop out a cube (or two) and place in a microwave safe bowl. Heat for about 15 seconds or however long it takes to make the food lukewarm and viola! You have homemade, yummy, not watered down or added salt baby food! You will get 8-16 servings out of each tray (depending on how much your baby eats).
Gerber baby food jars are about 60 cents per jar. Say your baby eats 2 ounces per serving. You will save AT LEAST $4.80! The squash cost me $1.50, so my final savings were $3.30. I save that every time I make my baby food and I'm not worried about any sort of recall or additives. I LOVE IT!!!
